TESA is conducted by a urologist using a local or general anaesthetic where a small needle and a special syringe are used to extract sperm directly from the testicles. Unlike the traditional open testicular biopsy, TESA saves time. The procedure takes from 20-30 minutes.
Sperm retrieval success rate by using TESA depends on whether azoospermia is obstructive or non-obstructive. In male with obstructive azoospermia, the sperm retrieval rate is close to 100% and in non-obstructive condition it is only 15 to 50%.
